Worthy of mention amongst Sirmione’s monuments is the parish Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Romanesque Church of San Pietro in Mavino, Villa Cortine, a splendid neo-classical style building turned into a luxury hotel and the Villa where Maria Callas stayed during the 1950s. The northern tip of the island is completely covered by what is called the Grottoes of Catullos, i.e. the remains of a Roman villa from the first century A.D. This special place was recently chosen to shoot a movie scene for “Call me by your name”. At the foot of this archaeological area the so called Jamaica Beach has become a very popular and beloved spot for young gay couples on vacation.

After lunch on your own, board on your Private Boat and pass by the famous Island of Garda, the largest of all the lake and a private property. It has always been a symbol of great mysticism due to the fact that San Francesco from Assisi founded here a community of friars. Today it owes its fascination to its extraordinary villa built in Neo-Gothic-Venetian style which was designed in the early 19th century. This imposing and harmonious building is full of surprising architectural details. It will be possible to navigate around it to admire the terraces and the gardens around the villa, which is surrounded by luxuriant and unspoiled vegetation. The island is covered with heavenly woods made of pine and cypress trees, acacias and lemon trees, magnolias and agaves. The island is magic and mystery and the sound of the bird songs seem to echo the joyful spirits of those who have cared for this place throughout the centuries. Then you will arrive to Gardone Riviera is considered to be one of the most precious gems along the western shore of the lake for the variety and magnificence of its vegetation due to the mildness of the climate. It is a famous, international sojourn station lying among bright hills, large gardens, villas and sumptuous hotels. In 1921 the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio came to Gardone Riviera and settled at Villa Cargnacco turning it into a monumental and scenic complex called today Vittoriale degli Italiani. It is a sort of Citadel that stands out on about nine hectares of land and is composed by d’Annunzio’s house, a set of buildings, a large theatre, avenues, squares, gardens, parks and streams. Inside this extraordinary complex visitors can admire the SVA 10 biplane, by which d’Annunzio flew over Vienna, the antisubmarine speedboat MAS 96, which he used to participate in the “Buccari Escapade” as well as his motor-cars. The most impressive object is the Cruiser Puglia on the flank of a hill, an extraordinary gift the poet got from the Navy in 1925. Finally, on the top of the highest hill, the Mausoleum contains d’Annunzio’s tomb and the urns of his wartime companions who took part in the conquest of Fiume. One of the most famous was Guido Keller, an Italian aviator and political activist. Keller founded a yoga group in Fiume, which adopted the swastika as one of its symbols. The group had esoteric and naturist tendencies and Keller was often portrayed nude in photos of the time. He slept semi-nude at the top of a tree together with his pet eagle. A habitual user of cocaine, he was also a devotee of group sex, including with male partners. Finally back to Sirmione passing by Punta San Vigilio, one of the most enchanting place on Lake Garda; stretching out across the cool limpid water, forming a point that takes its name from a monk who lived in the year 1200. Even in Roman times it was well known and inhabited. From the boat one can get close to the beautiful sixteen-century Villa Guarienti built on the top of a rock, surrounded by gardens and a park with orange and lemon groves which thrive due to the mild climate. Within the gardens lies the small ancient church dedicated to San Vigilio and nearby an enchanting small port full of visitors enjoying a coffee at the Bar Taverna.
